"ULTRALIGERO 18-19"

ULTRALIGER - DEVELOPMENT OF ULTRALIGERAL ALLOYS TO BE PROCESSED WITH ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGIES

DESCRIPTION

Additive Manufacturing (FA) technologies allow the production of products with more complex geometries than those obtained through traditional manufacturing technologies. The main feature of FA technologies is that the parts or products are manufactured by the successive selective addition of material, directly from a digital file with the geometry of the CAD part 3D.
One of the limitations of additive metal fabrication technologies is the materials that can be processed, being conditioned by some steels, Co-Cr alloys, nickel base alloys, titanium alloys and some aluminum alloys.
Within ultralight alloys, aluminum alloys that are being processed by additive technologies are designed to be processed by foundry techniques and their properties are not suitable for structural applications. At present, these cast aluminum alloys are being processed with laser beam metal (SLM) technologies, however, these technologies; They have a lower production speed (up to 25 cm3 / h) compared to electron beam technologies (up to 60 cm3 / h).
Additive metal fabrication is an opportunity for the industry to develop new products with high added value using the great geometric freedom of manufacturing parts layer by layer. It is a very powerful trend to obtain products of low weight but for this it is necessary to have resistant materials, as isotropic as possible and of very low density.

OBJECTIVES

With this scenario, the ULTRALIGERO project has as its main objective to develop an ultralight magnesium, aluminum or titanium based alloy that is compatible with the processing using the high productivity additive manufacturing technology known as electron beam melting (EBM). In the project the raw material will be manufactured, the process conditions will be obtained and the material processed with said technology will be characterized. This project aims to give the industry a way of high productivity of ultralight parts by additive manufacturing which means advantages for multiple sectors.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Year 2019: Result obtained

Deliverables:

Year 2019: -Optimal manufacturing parameters of the ultralight alloy Ti48Al2Nb2Cr to obtain dense or solid parts by optimizing the loss of Al, the most volatile component of the alloy.

-Microstructural characterization of the processed alloy and comparison with those obtained by conventional techniques to verify the suitability of the specifications previously obtained.

-Manufacturing of samples with simple geometry (cubes) guaranteeing the repeatability and reproducibility of the process parameters.

-Exploration of an alternative way to manufacture lightweight materials: obtaining graphene from the addition of an affordable precursor, generating a composite material of a Ti6Al4V-graphene and Cu-graphene metal matrix.
