"SOLGELMADERA"

SOLGELMADERA - MULTIFUNCTIONAL COATING ON WOOD FOR DIFFERENT FINAL USES INSIDE

DESCRIPTION

The project is based on the development of hybrid multifunctional coatings for the protection of different wood substrates, mainly providing abrasion / scratch resistance without losing aesthetic properties. Currently there are finishing processes in the market for wood and materials derived from it, with high technical performance, both chemical and mechanical, but even so, they do not reach the resistance of other competing synthetic materials for many indoor end uses. Being the need for greater mechanical resistance, especially against abrasion and scratching, the most necessary and demanded to be able to compete with materials such as compact laminates, with greater market segment in severe use applications such as floors and coatings walls for public use spaces, or horizontal or work surfaces, in kitchen, bathroom and office furniture. However, from a sustainability point of view, wood as a material is the most appropriate material for use in construction due to its natural origin, its recyclability, less contribution to the carbon footprint of its transformation and manufacturing processes. final elements (coverings, floors, structures, furniture ...). The purpose of this project is to increase the performance of organic coatings applied to wood that are currently being used for severe uses, with an application system accessible to all types of companies.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of this project is to develop a new hybrid coating based on sol-gel technology with high mechanical resistance against scratching and wear but specific for wood substrates in order to improve the mechanical resistance of the wood finishing processes that currently exist in the market for severe uses, so that the wood can compete at the same level with other less sustainable synthetic substrates. Given the results obtained with this hybrid technology in other substrates and in other sectors with high technical requirements, this project proposes the use of sol-gel technology, with low or no VOC emissions, as an alternative to processes of existing finishes to achieve higher mechanical resistance for indoor end use in which market and regulatory requirements are high, for example, floors and wall coverings for public use spaces, or horizontal or work surfaces in kitchen furniture , bathroom and office. Work will be carried out specifically in the development of coatings based on the epoxy-siloxane technology improved with additivation, in those cases where it is considered necessary, with nanomaterials that can provide greater resistance or added value to the final coating. Said coating will be applied directly on different wood substrates, studying their chemical and physical interaction through various application conditions.
