DEVELOPMENT OF A METHODOLOGY TO INCORPORATE MOST EFFICIENT, SUSTAINABLE AND COMPETITIVE PROCESSES AND MATERIALS IN THE FURNITURE SECTOR FOR COLLECTIVES

DESCRIPTION

The present R&D project - co-financed by the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE) and the European Funds for Regional Development (FEDER Funds) - aims to develop an eco-design methodology, flexible and easy to use by companies in the sector of furniture for communities and their corresponding value chain, to incorporate more efficient, sustainable and competitive materials and processes in the design and development of products with less environmental impact. The methodology will be supported by a computer tool that helps companies in the systematic application of ecodesign.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the project is the development of a flexible and easy-to-use methodology by companies in the sector furniture sector, and its corresponding value chain, to incorporate more efficient, sustainable and competitive materials and processes in the design and development of products with less environmental impact.

This methodology will take into account the needs and capabilities of SMEs in the sector of furniture for communities (resources, project delivery times, etc.) to ensure that it is functional for the strict deadlines and operational requirements of these types of companies.

On the other hand, the methodology will have the eco-design approach to cover the main environmental aspects of the product throughout its life cycle and its corresponding potential impacts, and avoid transferring impacts from one phase to another. It must also be objective and with a strong scientific basis, for which it will be based on the life cycle analysis.

RESULTS OBTAINED

2016 Year: Project results report.

Deliverables:

Year 2016: The methodology is made up of several modules that are described below and shown
in the diagram.

The theoretical module on ecodesign provides support to the company to develop the
various diagnostic and evaluation modules.

The management module helps to systematize ecodesign, interpreting the requirements of ISO 14006, providing the elements to include the environmental variable in the design of
product and develop the associated procedures.

Diagnostics of ecodesign processes and strategies provide the environment for
a guided reflective analysis of the balance of productive activity, its market context
(motivating factors) and the basis for establishing the policy and action plan of strategies
environmental aspects of the company throughout the entire life cycle of its products.

The diagnosis of strategies, applied to a specific product during the conceptual design,
selects the ecodesign strategies to apply in the development of said product.

The environmental evaluation of the product, after the detailed design and based on its composition and
life cycle,) measures in a comparative way, the improvement achieved in:

· Environmental aspects: allows verification of compliance with environmental requirements
identified for materials or the product itself, and collect evidence
documents for eco-labelling, customer requirements or tenders.
The images show the structuring of the environmental aspects of the product and a graphic representation of the assessment obtained for a product (V1) and its eco-designed version (V2), according to the various axes in which these environmental aspects are grouped.

· Environmental impacts: performs a life cycle analysis and allows obtaining
impact indicators
